According to Bruno Uzzan, Co-Founder and CEO of Total Immersion (www.t-immersion.com), that revolution encompasses “12 years of innovation in video capture and video resolution -- from low-res webcams to embedded high frame-rate cams in mobile devices, from computer-animated movies to 3D cinema today. These breakthroughs have supported our vision – to transform passive consumers into active participants – for more than a decade.”

For Total Immersion, that translates to more than 800 projects delivered since 2008. The company operates six offices worldwide and works with more than 90 Partners in 40 countries. “We see readiness and practicality in this next generation of AR applications,” Uzzan said. “We see an ‘AR-ready’ world.”

Underscoring the distance AR traveled in 2010, Stephen Mietelski of Mullen Advertising said this about Mullen’s partnership with Total Immersion, on behalf of Olympus and its PEN E-PL1 micro camera (http://getolympus.com/pen/): “Augmented reality has been used by companies before, but more as a gimmick than as an actual, working, in-depth product demo. This is as close to having the camera in your hands as you can get without actually having it in your hands.” The Olympus AR experience attracted some 100,000 unique visitors its first month, and repeat visitors comprise 15 percent of current traffic. The application recently won the prestigious Summit Award.

AR Everywhere in 2011

What’s to come in the year ahead? According to Uzzan, “ubiquity.” D’Fusion®, the company’s patented software solution, will be available on all devices (PCs, tablets, smartphones, set-top boxes) and operating systems: Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iPhone OS^®, Android, Bada and Maemo, among others. And helping standardize it all will be Adobe Flash®. Adobe and Total Immersion recently formed a strategic alliance designed to accelerate market penetration of AR applications.

In 2011, look for new computer vision algorithms that will dramatically improve AR’s ability to “see” natural features and respond accordingly, Uzzan said. “AR is a new human interface, and in the year ahead, applications will incorporate enhanced face tracking, hand-tracking and shape-based image recognition, drawing on large, local image recognition databases,” he suggested.

Even as applications encompass powerful new capabilities, AR application development will become more accessible, quicker and more cost-effective, Uzzan predicted. Adobe Flash development tools will help agencies and designers reduce the total cost of ownership, integrating D’Fusion Studio as a distinct development platform for desktop and mobile apps alike, and placing D’Fusion in Platform as a Service (PaaS) mode.

As mobile devices continue their march to supplant the desktop, the massive boost in bandwidth that fueled rapid smart phone adoption will continue to reshape the landscape, Uzzan said. In retail, the trend in mobile AR will see apps moving from simple wayfinding and local search, to more robust experiential shopping tools (bridging information in real time, offering dynamic visualization, and so on). Says Juniper Research: “Given its potential to geotag products or locations with brand/campaign-specific information, as we near the end of 2010 a raft of major retailers and brands are releasing apps with an AR element.”

“Nearly 30 percent of U.S. smart phone owners will use those to research or buy products this holiday season,” Total Immersion’s Uzzan noted. “Similarly, 44 percent of U.S. adults will shop online for holiday items this year, according to the National Retail Federation. And mobile commerce likewise is taking off. By 2014, 30 percent of mobile subscribers with data plans in mature markets will use AR at least once a week, per Gartner.

“What all of this means is that augmented reality is poised for explosive growth, as the technology, the tools and the applications converge in 2011 in remarkable ways,” Uzzan said.

Co-Founder Of Total Immersion: About The Future Of 3D
(Read more...)

Bruno Uzzan, co-founder and CEO of Total Immersion ( www.t-immersion.com ), send us some reflections about the real practical use of 3D. Total Immersion is the global leader company in augmented reality. They develop all kinds of solutions in 3D through augmented reality that solve real problems or enhance a real experience. He answers to the question "Where is 3D taking us?", which can be re-formulated as "Where is the future of 3D?"

According to Bruno Uzzan, part of the answer lies in augmented reality (AR). AR - which blurs the line between the virtual world and the real world by integrating real time interactive 3D graphics into a live video stream - is, for increasing numbers of consumers, the front line in the 3D revolution. It's the way that millions are now getting up close and personal with 3D, via near-tactile experiences.

"This isn't your father's 3D. In an earlier era, 3D in films - typically h or r or films -- was used as a trick, a f or eground element. In this post-Avatar era, 3D is now the depth of the environment, a way to immerse the audience and create hyper-realistic experiences. The 3D phenomenon is part of a profound transition in expression, from analog to digital - not at the expense of the analog world, but as an adjunct to it. In short order, we will begin to consume entertainment differently, we will begin to shop differently, we will begin to see differently."

According to Uzzan, what's missing - what the industry needs now - is "community engagement around a vision of both 3D and AR as transformative platforms f or experiential advertising, marketing, education and entertainment."

First Ever Interactive 3D Video With Twitter Integration
(Read more...)

On June 22, pop artist Robyn launched a 3D video using no cameras, written entirely in code, with much of the content fed by fans via a Twitter feed. Robyn has premiered her new web video for "Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do" on Tuesday, June 22nd on her website, Robyn.com.

The video is the first of its kind, a 3D video using no cameras, written entirely in code, with much of the content fed by fans via a Twitter feed. The video is a unique experience with every view as it re- generates with each loading of the URL. The first portion of the video features visualization of Robyn's lyrics in 3D.

The remainder of the video is created by users themselves who tweet in what is killing them using the Twitter hash tag, #killingme. These tweets are themselves visualized and credited to the user. The video has the potential to become the infinite video as users can continue to add on to the endless stream of #killingme comments. "Don't Fucking Tell Me What To Do" is the opening track from Body Talk Pt. 1 which sees Robyn sardonically running through a check-list of guilt-inducing vices- "My drinking is killing me, my smoking is killing me" against a propulsive, glitchy backbeat.

"It's like everyone wants you to be perfect and you're dreaming of a world where you can do what you want. I guess it´s about the modern world and the stress I think most people in it feel sometimes. It´s a pretentious message so I tried to make it as simple as I could. I´m talking about how I felt when I came off my tour"

The concept was originally developed by Mary Fagot, Creative Director for Blip Boutique and the web development team at Stopp Web in Stockholm, lead by Project Manager & Creative Thomas Bjork. The Stopp Web development team were experimenting with Anaglyphic 3D at the time, providing a perfect opportunity to visualize all the things that were killing Robyn.

The desire to involve fans in an interactive experience lead to the incorporation of the twitter feed to give the chance to see the things that are killing them visualized things in Robyn's video. Listen to the track and try out the video here: http://robyn.com/killingme

Helios Interactive In Expo 2010 Shanghai
(Read more...)

The visitors to the nation of Colombia's pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai can enjoy exploring Colombia through 20 interactive displays.

Credit Helios Interactive Technologies (www.heliosinteractive.com), the emerging leader in "experience design", served as technology architect for the full complement of displays, each of which enables visitors to engage with government agencies and corporate sponsors, and "touch base" with the country's railways, airports, renowned emerald mines, and other major assets.

The displays are all highly interactive, incorporating multi-touch technologies for an exceptionally memorable experience. The fifth world's fair of the millennium, Expo 2010 opened on May 1 and will run through October 31, at the Nanpu Bridge-Lupu Bridge Region in the center of Shanghai . In building the displays, Helios partnered with Ralph Miller, of Ralph Miller Productions of San Francisco, and the nation of Colombia .

Now in its second month, Expo 2010 has been a remarkable success for China , drawing nearly 1 million visitors each weekend - a powerful follow-on to the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Located directly across from the USA pavilion, the Colombia exhibit welcomes as many as 10,000 visitors each day. Three large-format touch-tables are installed in the pavilion's third hall, along with five 55-inch LCD touchscreens and twelve 19-inch LCD touchscreens. Collectively, they serve as "virtual tourist bureaus," enabling visitors to explore personalized information about Colombia 's richly varied regions, from the Caribbean to the Pacific.

"In developing these displays, we wanted to come as close as we could to bringing Colombia to Shanghai - to enable those who have never visited Colombia to see, feel and experience the country, all within the setting of the world's fair. We're honored that the nation of Colombia selected Helios as a key creative design and technology partner for its pavilion. Just as an on-the-ground tour involves participation and engagement, so it is with this exhibit, where visitors can interact with the country's culture, heritage, and vitality as they move through the hall. What's been most striking thus far is everyone's willingness to engage with the displays. This is as 'hands on' as it gets. These exhibits required an extensive amount of cooperation among private and government agencies and Helios, and the results reflect those partnerships. With 70 million people expected to visit Expo 2010 in Shanghai , we wanted to make the Colombia Pavilion a highly memorable stop on everyone's itinerary." -Mike Schaiman, Helios co-founder and Managing Partner. <\div>

Total Immersion Creates First Logo For AR Applications
(Read more...)

In a move to advance uniformity and organization in augmented reality (AR), Total Immersion (www.t-immersion.com), the global leader in AR, today unveiled the first logo for augmented reality applications. The company made the announcement at ARE 2010, the first augmented reality conference, in Santa Clara , Calif.

The "AR+" logo - a stylized rendering of the letters "AR," encircled by a border, with a plus sign in the upper right - is designed to be included on product packaging, and in advertisements, marketing materials and other relevant communications from any company providing AR-enhanced media. AR+ logo artwork can be downloaded at no charge, from http://arplus.t-immersion.com/.

Total Immersion said the move is intended to accomplish several objectives simultaneously: educate consumers, ease application development f or AR providers and their partners, allow f or seamless integration with existing solutions, control quality levels across the board, and promote industry growth. The company also urged creation of an industry-wide AR Standards Committee, designed to foster consideration of product standards, user experience definitions, and a communications framew or k.

According to Gartner, Inc., augmented reality is one of the "top 10 disruptive technologies" of our time. Total Immersion, the commercial pioneer in the space, deployed some 270 projects in 50 countries in 2009, and the growth of AR is accelerating. Major industry layers are considering AR in their roadmaps or have already done so, as offered solutions. Rapidgrowth typically gives rise to standardization efforts.

"Technology fragmentation is an obstacle to expansion and wide acceptance of AR. Industry leaders need to begin working together to develop protocols and standards, which will be widely accepted. Then, the AR community can grow quickly and become as open and inclusive as the Web is today." -Christine Perey, PEREY Research and Consulting.

"With the new AR+ logo, the industry can give consumers, developers, brands, and others a consistent framework for encountering and understanding augmented reality solutions. There's a sense that the AR industry has grown up too fast, that it has at times felt like the 'Wild West.' Today, the industry consists of multiple players, multiple platforms and easier access to AR. The new AR+ logo affirms that we're working with a new human interface, now going mainstream."
-Bruno Uzzan, CEO, Total Immersion.

Citing diverse examples of successful standards initiatives -- from ISO 9001 and the World Wide Web Consortium, to the USDA Organic food standards to the MPAA 's movie rating system - Uzzan said the time has come "to identify clearly to our audience when they can benefit from AR. We have thought long and hard about it and created this symbol, which can be used by every player in every market to reflect this new stream of 'AR everywhere.'"

"We're sensing a real demand in the market for this kind of clarity, backed by an organized, collective effort.
Many brands need a way to communicate their AR feature and how to access it - in a sense, telling the market what is and what is not AR.
AR is moving well beyond digital marketing. Coming up fast are AR solutions in e-commerce/retail, experiential education and entertainment, medicine and science, embedded AR in durable consumer products, and public safety and transportation, among others. We believe AR+ will become a universally recognized symbol of this emerging industry, and we encourage others to join with us in adopting it."
-Bruno Uzzan, CEO, Total Immersion.

Micoy Awarded Global Patent for Multi-Dimensional 3D Immersive Spherical Imaging Technology
(Read more...)

This interesting press release tells how Micoy Corporation has patented a new and unique system for immersive spherical 3D environments. With this, the user gets immersed literally inside a movie or 3D creation. This is clearly the future of 3D experiences.

AMES, IOWA – Micoy Corporation, the world’s only provider of true omni-directional spherical 3D immersive imaging technology, today announced that it has been awarded Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) number WO 2206/107934 from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to promoting the protection of intellectual property around the world. The breakthrough technology enhances current 3D display offerings to become fully enclosed, truly immersive 3D environments for the most realistic viewing possible.

Promotional advertisers, tradeshow marketers, government agencies, movie theatres, videogame developers, entertainment venues and others can leverage the unique experience of Micoy’s truly immersive 3D image format to sell, educate and entertain.

“We are ultimately taking the way people interact with games and 3D entertainment to a whole new level,” said Don Pierce, founder and president of Micoy. “For example, showing a 3D film rendered with Micoy technology allows viewers to be literally enveloped and inside the movie in a 360-degree environment, making the experience incredibly realistic and highly memorable. Some have said that the future of 3D should be as clear as a giant picture window and we want to help you step through that window.”

HOW IT WORKS

Rather than compete with current 3D technology, Micoy’s image format is complementary and enhances the viewing experience regardless of which hardware is employed.

With content rendered in the Micoy image format, the 360-degree volumetric stereo separation is mapped in the image itself. The Micoy rendered content can then be displayed in either a panoramic or dome theater to allow for the truly immersive visuals. A flat screen is unable to display truly immersive 3D since it does not physically surround the viewer.

MICOY’S FULL SUITE OF PRODUCTS

Micoy leverages its patented 360°3D technology in three ways:

THE MICOY 360°3D TOOLSET is the world’s first panoramic 3D image format. This powerful software rendering toolset enables the user to create panoramic 3D computer animation from films produced using current 3D industry standard animation software programs such as Maya or 3D Studio Max. The Micoy 360°3D format creates a true 3D environment around the viewer. Through Micoy’s rendering product, any computer animated scene or simulation can be turned into a compelling panoramic 3D experience.

THE MICOY REAL-TIME 360°3D STEREO RENDERING ENGINE, highly anticipated and in current development, will make possible the first-ever real-time panoramic 360°3D stereo engine available commercially. This development will allow users in entertainment, virtual reality simulation, industrial/military training and computer gaming applications to truly experience this engaging format. Micoy is currently accepting key industry development partners to help bring this technology to market.

THE MICOY 360°3D CAMERA is the advanced panoramic 3D digital video camera system currently under development using Micoy’s optical designs. Micoy is also presently seeking development partners for this pioneering project. The ability to record or view an immersive experience in real time will open the door to significant applications previously thought impossible for entertainment, government/military applications and beyond.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

Micoy will showcase their ground-breaking 360-3D immersive technology within a dome environment at the next 3D Gaming Summit in April 2010 in Universal City , Calif. Additional screenings are scheduled upon request.

ABOUT MICOY

Micoy Corporation is the world’s only provider of true omni-directional spherical 3D immersive imagery. Based in Ames, Iowa, the company licenses its software to content producers and distributors from a variety of markets such as promotional advertising, tradeshow exhibition, military training, feature film, videogames and theme park destinations, to name a few.
