Chrome 2.0
Google Chrome has reached version 2.0 and is out of beta. It is a very fast browser. Although Firefox has lots of more features, Chrome is good as a secondary lightweight browser, for example when running other applications that take many resources like Second Life.

Blender's third short 3D animation film will be based on a scenario of renowned author Martin Lodewijk. The film - financed via internet and realized with open source software - will be distributed freely.

ARToolKit is a software library for building Augmented Reality (AR) applications.
Augmented Reality is getting into our lives as Wii consoles and other gadgets, and may be the future of software developments.
In AR applications, the virtual and the real get mixed, and the user experiments virtual entities as real, seeing and sensing things that are computer-generated.
AR ToolKit is available for SGI IRIX, Linux, MacOS and Windows, and is distributed with complete source code.

The license is GPL. There is a strange notice in their website about commercial applications of ARToolKit. Strange because GPL allows commercial use, so I suppose that they mean that you must ask for another licensing if you're going to modify or merge the software with your own, that is when the problems with GPL arise.

The creation of avatars is done through a visual process, choosing between different options. For some features, you choose 2 characters. For example, 2 head shapes. Then you move a slider to adjust your appearance between that 2 characters. This way, you can generate an unique face for your avatar.

Murcia (Spain) VRML Sceneries Of High Quality

Accidentally, I found some screenshots in Flickr that shown some virtual sceneries made with VRML. This made me search for the author of these 3D worlds, and I found Grita Internet, a Spanish agency that designs virtual environments in this language.
They have built a big series of sceneries for the government of Murcia (Spain), and all are listed here. They are small but very immersive, with photorealistic textures.
You can visit them all for free using a plugin that supports VRML, like for example Vivaty or Cortona, that runs in Chrome.
For some reason, Cortona in Firefox has problems with these sceneries, but runs fine in Chrome. Of course, you can also use Blaxxun in Internet Explorer.
So install a VRML plugin, and visit them here.

How To Optimize Models With Meshlab

Shapeways has published an excellent tutorial on how to reduce the number of polygons of your 3D models, so you get a model that looks the same but has less file size (for Internet use), and less hardware requirements.
The tutorial tells how to use Meshlab for this. Meshlab is a mesh manipulation open source tool.

Rocking the Metaverse is the first multiworld music show, aimed at bringing live music in the most important virtual worlds, particolarly: Second Life, Opensim (Reaction Grid), Metaplace, Twinity.
4 Musicians and a few Artists will cross the most important metaverse platforms, performing live and making live shows for the enjoyment of the virtual worlds members.
The first date is scheduled for the 19th of may at the Orange Island, one of the most important cultural venue in Second Life. Then the tour will move to Open Sims, the opensource metaverse platform, where the musicians will have the opportunity to perform at the Reaction Grid.
Once left both Opensims and Second Life, musicians will move again for a series of dates in Twinity and Metaplace. Both Twinity and Metaplace are raising the bar of the metaverse environment, providing users with innovative amazing features to enjoy and express themselves.
Rocking the Metaverse mission is to support and power the music culture in virtual worlds, offering musicians a new way to engage the audience and new stage to show off.

The Good Consequences Of P2P Regulation

It seems that P2P is being internationally limited by different countries, and forced to respect copyright law. Legislations seem still very immature. Let's see the consequences that this may have.
The European law against bad use of P2P networks allowed that national authorities could exclude users from the internet without a court order.
We all may be happy that this has been stopped, but copyrighted materials need defense.

There's also a law in the USA that makes any P2P software used for transferring files from one computer to another to include a big warning and require the user to give "informed consent" when installing the software and every time it's used.
This is a big pain for the user, that will be prompted endlessly with warning floating boxes.
The trend is to control, limit and regulate P2P networks, and to protect materials that are released under copyright or other licenses that don't allow free re-distribution.
Obviously, this is to fight against software piracy. Also, now that electronic book readers are becoming better and cheaper, people will tend to buy more ebooks. If piracy is not controlled, this may suppose the ruin for authors of books.
In the last years, software developers have also suffered from too much piracy, making programming a ruinous activity. And that's because people not only download through P2P applications from big companies, that can overcome the loss of a part of their benefits, but also applications done by independent programmers or small companies.
In some countries of Europe, people have developed a very weak sense of what is the required effort to produce the things that they steal through P2P, and that if they continue doing this, they ruin the small developers.
On the other part, as new laws emerge, everybody can see that the amount of pirate content on eMule and similar programs is very low. If you search for any application you get very few results. And most of them contain viruses, mostly trojans.
Also, very often, pedophile content is hidden inside other files, and this may suppose being accused of that crime if you don't report it to the authorities.
Obviously, laws are going the wrong way, because annoying the user (as in the US) may damage software applications, and banning people from Internet without a court order (as in Europe) is against the individual rights.
But software developers, and now ebook authors, need protection.
If you don't agree with this, you should just think that Internet has popularized everything. An author of ebooks, a writer, is not a member of an elite anymore. Everybody can write a book, and hope to be read, and maybe get a life from that.
Also, many programmers may want to sell their applications, done with many months and years of effort. It is their right to charge for that work.

And for users, everybody must understand that if you like a service, a software application or a book, you must support their creators. And this must be done directly, not through taxes, I mean buying their materials. If you pay for a software application, a book, or a service, as when you make a donation, you are supporting something that you like, and encouraging the author to keep on doing what you like.
We have to pay for things that we have never chosen, to our politicians, through taxes. Why is it so hard for everyone to support what they like? You have the control over all this.
Also, why do you need to get pirate software? There are tons of open source and free software. And if you need something better, that is commercial software, just buy that. There are tons of cheap soft out there, many times as good as the most expensive ones. Often we review them here.
The consequences of P2P regulation, if done the right way, are many and good:
And derived from the limitations and these beneficial effects, the most important consequence: people will learn to respect other people's work, and that they need their support to continue doing quality products.
VirtualBox: Run Windows XP Inside Linux, And More

VirtualBox is an open source application developed by Sun Microsystems that allows you to install and run an operative system inside another.
VirtualBox is being featured in many computer magazines these days.

This free (GPL) software creates a virtual computer that has a virtual hard drive, where you can install another operative system. First, you define how much RAM memory and video memory will it have, and later the size of the hard drive. Then, you install the operative system as you would in a real PC.
The new virtual computer runs inside its own window, although you can enter in full screen view, and almost all behaves like in a real PC with that OS.
And why do you want to do this?
For example, I have VirtualBox installed in my two computers. One is a barebone that runs Fluxbuntu linux. Fluxbuntu is a branch of Ubuntu that uses very little amount of resources (only 40-45 Mb of RAM memory). I use that computer mainly for backups of my data.
But sometimes I can't use my big computer, that runs Windows, because I am using it for something critical, like rendering things or recording a DVD, or defragment the hard drive.
I run VirtualBox inside my Fluxbuntu Linux barebone, and I can continue working.
By the way, Fluxbuntu is ideal for this, because it uses very little amount of RAM, so the amount that VirtualBox can dedicate to the virtual Windows PC is high.
Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD.

Kambi VRML Game Engine continues improving, and the new features are now available through nightly builds. They include 3D textures, new extensions for VRML/X3D worlds that provide projective textures and shadow maps, hardware occlusion query for very large scene rendering, and more.
Second Life has published a PDF book that is a quickstart guide to this virtual world. You can download it for free. Also have a look to ours, and the cheatsheet that we published.
Also, some informations have appeared saying that Second Life will expand their support for social media services.
Myrl published this news about the interconnectivity between Second Life and Metaplace, through a an instant messaging and two-way chat bridge.
You have up to July 15 to take part in a contest for COLLADA developers, organized by the Khronos Group and the Media Grid Immersive Education Initiative. Vivaty has changed the UI of their application and now it is much more easy to use, and also has added text triggers for gestures (so when you say something the avatar plays a gesture).

MeshLab an open source, portable, and extensible system for the processing and editing of unstructured 3D triangular meshes has added X3D import and export and VRML import support.
The annual Web3D Symposium is a major event, which unites researchers, developers, experimenters, and content creators in a dynamic learning environment. Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing, and creating new 3D web and multimedia technologies, such as X3D, VRML, COLLADA, Croquet, MPEG4, Java3D, and Canvas3D. This year, it will take place in Germany.
The new version of Octaga Player is out, and it's now capable of displaying more than 30 million polygons with the same performance. Octaga Player 2.3.0.4 is free for personal use only. A GoPro version is available for only 49€.
In the early days of VRML a group of volunteers from across the world met every day and night online for three and half months to create the world's first virtual reality epic. The IrishSpace project succeeded as it was premiered to the world at the first Irish National Space Exhibition. It was shown to Astronaut Neil Armstrong and the Irish Deputy Prime Minister.

Advanced Library for Poser: Useful Freeware For Poser

If you're a Poser user you may know that its library of models can become a complete mess and a torture for you. Advanced Library is a freeware application that solves this problem.
When you use Poser, all your models, hairs, poses and other things are saved to folders inside the Runtime folder of this application. Every time that you purchase a new piece of content for Poser, it is installed inside the Runtime.
As names of folders must be unique, so none of your files gets overwritten, every vendor names that folder with their business name. Others use weird names to ensure that no one uses the same.
The result is a complete mess, and a library of models where no one can find anything.
Fortunately, Andreas Beckh has developed Advanced Library.
It allows you to build your own library for Poser. The beta versions also support DAZ Studio. Using Advanced Library, you can define folders with understandable names and link them to where your models are.
To use it, you just install it, and a script. Open Poser, run the script, and run the gallery, and start building your own library.

Shapeways' News: Print Your 3D Models In 3 New Colors

Now the 2.148 is out, alongside with the new Lucy avatar, that is available in both smls (which can be easily exported to x3d & H-Anim) and vrml format:

Lucy was modeled using NURBS Patches with Seamless3D. For those who already know about this, here's a video that shows the differences between the old and the new Lucy avata, that can be noticed when both models are shown one after the other from the exact same angle and position.
